Strong winds cause travel disruption

Gale force winds caused widespread disruption across the UK’s road network earlier this week.

Winds of up to 80mph forced the closure of a number of river crossings including the QE2 bridge (Dartford), both Severn crossings, the Orwell bridge and the A249 Sheppey Crossing.

Strong winds also brought down a number of trees and power cables leaving debris and surface water on many roads across the UK.

The conditions led to the Highways Agency advising drivers to plan for their journey before they set out. Drivers were told to check the forecast and road conditions and leave extra time if travel conditions were poor.
