The former Transport Minister, Dr Stephen Ladyman, has opened this year’s Highways SIB (Seeing is Believing) event by praising the industry for its thought and skill in keeping traffic on the roads moving.
In a wide-ranging address, Ladyman – who held the portfolio from 2005 to 2007 – discussed the importance of transport to government, but explained that the industry must understand it’ll never be something that influences how the vast majority of the population vote.
He praised the existing Government’s investment in local roads, and highlighted the importance of technology in solving problems, including the company he represents, Clearview Intelligence and its innovative solution at the Sheriffhall roundabout in Edinburgh.
And Dr Ladyman also discussed the importance of the event, and its publications Highways Magazine and Smart Highways (for which he writes a column) in educating the industry, saying it shows how far the industry has come, but how much more we can do to improve transport and road safety in this country.
