Driver dies after hitting road sign in Wales

A motorist has died after a car hit a large road sign on the A40 in Pembrokeshire in a four-car crash.

Emergency services were called at 1955 GMT on Tuesday to the scene, west of the Penblewin roundabout near Narberth.

The driver of the BMW M3 saloon, who police said was local, died and two people were taken to Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest for treatment.

The road was closed for five-and-a-half hours after the crash and police are appealing for witnesses.

A spokesman for Dyfed-Powys Police said two passengers in one of the cars received minor injuries.

The latest tragedy will reignite the debate about the use of passive safety on our highways as the introduction of lightweight, collapsible signposts across the network is delayed by funding cuts.
